Paul Van Den Heuvel is a Belgian who is passionate when it comes to his Gins. He knows what he likes and is not afraid to put it out there. Right down to his opinion on what he considers to be the perfect neutral mixer for his precious liquids. He wants us to experience his pride and joy at its very best.

The roots of these gins stem from a beautiful estate in Andalusia, Spain. Paul launched his dream in 2015. The Gin is lovingly created on an ancient Hacienda near the village of Gaucin. In total there are 27 fantastic herbs and fruits used creating the 3 offerings from Gaugin. These include Sun ripened Mediterranean lemons, oranges and grapefruit. Teaming this with botanicals such as wild thyme, wild rosemary, juniper, wild sage and lavender results in stunning traditional Mediterranean tastes that are timeless.

Paul sent me his Gaugin Classic to try. On first opening the bottle I was blown away by the grapefruit scent, followed by the other citrusy aromas of the orange and lemon. I knew then this would be love at first taste. As I mentioned earlier, Paul is very specific as to what makes a perfect serve so unusually for me I did what I was told for once and used the suggested Schweppes premium tonic and lemon zest and a slice instead of experimenting with my own garnish or tonic. This combination was a citrus taste explosion. The tonic brought the flavour of the gin through perfectly and the zest and slice of lemon complimented this Mediterranean masterpiece so well. This serve was rousing, refreshing and revitalising and left me wishing I could close my eyes and magic myself to somewhere warm and sunny on what is a rather wet and grey day here in Northern Ireland. I loved the tangy aftertaste I was left with. I hope Paul won’t shout but for my second serve I added fresh basil to the lemon and I found this added a fragrant sweetness which I really enjoyed , to me it brought out the herbs used in the making of the gin.

This bottle is crammed full of nature’s best and the attention to detail given to all the ingredients is unmistakable. Beautiful Gin that will be hard to stay away from. I have a funny feeling it won’t last too long on the top shelf of my Gin Palace!!

Once again thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks to Paul at Gaugin for giving me the opportunity to write this review.

Till next time Gin Nerds
